Freedom is one of the most powerful words in the English language. It has inspired revolutions, fueled movements, and carried generations through oppression, sacrifice, and hope. As Black Americans, freedom is woven into our story. We know what it means to pray for it, march toward it, fight for it, and believe in it long before we ever saw it.
But during this month’s Oikeo Prayer Call, we were reminded that freedom that cannot be legislated, voted away, imprisoned, or stolen. It is the freedom that comes through Jesus Christ.
That freedom reaches beyond our circumstances and settles into our souls.
It is the freedom to live without being chained to fear.
The freedom to worship without shame.
The freedom to forgive what once held us hostage.
The freedom to become who God created us to be.
That is the freedom Christ purchased at Calvary.
Freedom Is More Than Independence
Coming on the heels of Independence Day, the call invited us to think beyond national freedom and consider spiritual freedom. While we should thank God for the liberties we enjoy as citizens, Scripture reminds us that the greatest act of liberation in history did not happen on a battlefield. It happened on a cross.

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Jesus was not speaking merely about physical oppression. He was speaking about the deeper bondage that lives within every human heart—sin, fear, guilt, pride, bitterness, addiction, despair, and anything else that keeps us from living fully in God’s presence.
Many people look free on the outside while carrying prisons within them.
Christ came to unlock those doors.
Freedom Has a Purpose
Freedom in Christ is never meant to stop with us.
One of the central Scriptures shared during the call was a reminder that God’s goodness is meant to be proclaimed.
“Give praise to the Lord, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted.” -Isaiah 12:4 (NIV)
Too often we treat our testimony as something private, when Scripture presents it as something powerful. Every answered prayer becomes evidence of God’s faithfulness. Every story of healing becomes an invitation for someone else to believe. Every testimony reminds another weary soul that God is still making ways where there appears to be no way.
This is why Oikeo has always encouraged participants to share their praise reports. Testimony is more than celebration—it is evangelism. It tells a watching world that the same God who delivered yesterday is still delivering today.
Prayer, Praise, and Worship Work Together
The call also reminded us that prayer, praise, and worship are inseparable companions in the life of faith. Prayer keeps us connected to God. Praise reminds us of what He has already done. Worship shifts our attention away from our problems and back toward His character.
When these three come together, something changes within us.
Fear begins to lose its grip.
Anxiety gives way to peace.
Doubt is confronted by truth.
Hope begins to rise again.
That doesn’t mean our circumstances immediately change. It means we are no longer defined by them because God’s presence becomes greater than our problems.
All Things Are Working Together
When life feels uncertain, believers often ask where God is in the middle of disappointment, delay, or suffering. Scripture answers that question with remarkable confidence.
“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”
–Romans 8:28 (NIV)
Notice that Paul does not say all things are good. Loss is not good. Sickness is not good. Grief is not good. Injustice is not good.
But God is so sovereign that He can weave even painful chapters into a story of redemption.
That promise gives believers the courage to keep praying when answers seem delayed and to keep trusting when the road ahead remains unclear.
Don’t Let Fear Silence Your Witness
One of the strongest challenges from the call was to stop allowing fear, timidity, and doubt to silence our witness. The world is filled with people searching for hope, yet many believers hesitate to share what God has done in their own lives.
Jesus never intended for His followers to hide the light He placed within them.
Our testimony may be the very thing that gives someone else the courage to pray again.
Our encouragement may become the reason another believer refuses to give up.
Our faith may become the invitation someone needs to discover Christ for themselves.
Freedom is never meant to be hidden.
It is meant to be shared.
The Charge
The freedom Christ offers is unlike anything the world can give because it is unlike anything the world can take away. It is not dependent on politics, prosperity, popularity, or personal success. It rests entirely in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
This week, spend time thanking God not only for the freedoms you enjoy, but for the freedom He purchased for you through His Son. Strengthen your prayer life. Make room for praise before you ask for provision. Worship before you worry. And don’t keep God’s goodness to yourself. Someone else may need to hear your testimony to believe that freedom is possible for them too.
