Oikeo Call #40 — When God Becomes Your Happy Place

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Forty calls. Forty moments of prayer. Forty opportunities to watch God move through testimonies, healing, deliverance, provision, and restoration. As Oikeo reached this milestone, the message was not about how far we have come, it was about where we go when our souls are tired.

In this month’s call, Denise Brown shared a reflection from a recent season of soul care and sabbatical in St. Thomas. A place once associated with peace, beauty, and rest revealed something even deeper: the greatest place of refuge is not found in a location, a vacation, a quiet beach, or an escape from responsibility.

The greatest refuge is the presence of God.

When Your Soul Needs More Than a Break

Many of us know what it means to be physically exhausted. We know what it means to need a weekend, a vacation, or a moment to catch our breath. But there is another kind of exhaustion that no plane ticket can fix.

The exhaustion of carrying unanswered questions.
The fatigue of making difficult decisions.
The weariness of being everything for everyone else while quietly wondering what God is asking next from your own life.

This is the place where God often meets us—not in our busyness, but in our stillness.

📖 Psalm 46:10 (NIV): “Be still, and know that I am God.”

Jesus Also Stepped Away

The beautiful paradox of the life of Jesus is that the Savior of the world consistently made time to step away from the world. Crowds followed Him. People needed healing. Disciples needed instruction. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows Him withdrawing to quiet places to pray. He understood that public ministry required private communion with the Father.

📖 Luke 5:16 (NIV): “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.”

If Jesus needed moments of retreat, how much more do we?

Moving From Escape to Encounter

There is a difference between escaping a problem and encountering God in the middle of it.

The world tells us that peace is somewhere we travel to. That if we can just reach the right destination, obtain the right job, find the right relationship, or achieve the right milestone, we will finally arrive.

But the believer understands a different truth: peace is a Person.

It is the presence of God that quiets the anxious mind. It is His wisdom that guides our next step. It is His voice that helps us discern what we should release and what we should pursue.

📖 Isaiah 30:21 (NIV): “Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way; walk in it.’”

The Invitation of Soul Care

Soul care is not selfish. It is stewardship.

God never asked us to run until we collapse. He invites us to sit with Him, speak honestly, listen carefully, and allow Him to restore what life has drained.

The same God who gives us assignments also gives us rest. The same God who calls us forward also calls us closer.

The question this call leaves us with is simple:

Where do you go when you need to be restored?

May the answer become less about a place and more about a Presence.

The Charge

This week, don’t just schedule time away. Schedule time with God.

Turn off the noise. Put down the agenda. Sit in His presence long enough to remember who you are without the titles, responsibilities, and expectations of the world.

Because the greatest vacation your soul will ever take is resting in the One who created it.
