The Power of Words: Oikeo Mens Call #5

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue:
and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

– Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)

In this month’s Men’s Prayer Call, we focused on the incredible power of words. In a time marked by stress—whether it’s hurricanes, elections, or personal challenges—it’s easy to let our emotions get the better of us. Often, we lash out at loved ones or use words carelessly. But this call reminded us that, just as God created the world with His words, we too have the power to speak life into existence.

The Bible tells us that our words are not just idle expressions—they have the power to build or tear down. Consider Proverbs 18:21 (NIV): “The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Our words can either bring life and encouragement or cause pain and division. This truth is more important now than ever. In times of heightened tension and stress, it’s easy to say things that we might later regret, but God calls us to use our words to uplift, support, and encourage those around us.

We were also reminded of how God Himself modeled this principle in the very act of creation. Genesis 1:3 (NIV) says, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” With His words, God brought the entire universe into being. This profound truth shows us just how powerful spoken words can be. If God can create with His words, how much more should we be careful with how we speak to one another?

During this prayer call, participants shared personal stories of how they had seen the impact of words in their lives—whether for good or bad. We talked about the importance of being intentional, especially during difficult times when it’s easy to let frustration or stress dictate our speech. Instead of lashing out at those closest to us, we can choose to speak life into our situations, our families, our job search and our communities.

How have your words impacted those around you lately? Have you spoken life or destruction? We encourage you to reflect on how you can use your words to build up others, especially during these stressful times. Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments below, and let’s continue to grow together in faith, lifting one another up with the power of our words.
