Oikeo Call #21

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.”

– Isaiah 9:2 (ESV)

This month’s Oikeo Prayer Call was led by Pastor Georgia Hill, a devoted leader and senior pastor from Life Church Riverside in Detroit. The theme of the call was centered around light, particularly in times of spiritual darkness and uncertainty. Drawing from Isaiah 8 and Isaiah 9, Pastor Georgia reflected on how God’s light shines on those who find themselves walking in darkness, and how we, as believers, are called to be that light in the world around us.

Understanding the Context of Isaiah 8 and 9

The book of Isaiah was written during a time of immense turmoil for the people of Israel. In Isaiah 8, God’s people were facing an impending invasion from Assyrian forces. The prophet Isaiah spoke to a nation that had turned away from God, seeking answers in the wrong places and living in fear and spiritual darkness. However, Isaiah 9:2 brings a glimmer of hope: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.” This verse prophesies the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would be the ultimate Light in a dark world. Pastor Georgia used this passage to remind us that even in times of deep darkness—whether personal or societal—God’s light is present, and we are called to reflect it.

Being Light in Dark Times

Pastor Georgia emphasized that as Christians, we are called to be a source of light in today’s world, especially in times of widespread darkness and negativity. She referenced Philippians 2:14-15 (NIV), where Paul encourages believers: “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky.” This call is especially relevant today, as we see division, mudslinging, and tension surrounding various events, including the current election season. In such times, it’s easy to get drawn into negativity and conflict, but God calls us to a higher standard. We are to shine brightly, honoring Him in all we do and setting an example of peace, love, and integrity.

The Path of Righteousness and the Light of God

Pastor Georgia also referenced Proverbs 4:18 (NIV), which says, “The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.” This verse serves as a powerful reminder that walking in righteousness brings an ever-increasing light to our lives. The journey of faith is a journey toward a brighter, more profound understanding of God’s love and grace. As we walk this path, we not only experience God’s light but become bearers of it to those around us, helping to dispel darkness and bring hope to those who are struggling.

The Takeaway

The message from Pastor Georgia Hill is both timely and essential. In a world that often feels overrun by spiritual darkness, negativity, and conflict, God is calling us to be carriers of His light. He wants us to shine brightly, to bring hope, and to reflect His love and peace to a world that desperately needs it. Whether facing personal challenges, navigating societal tensions, or observing the turmoil in today’s politics, we are encouraged to stay grounded in His light and share it with those around us.
