Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”
– Psalm 55:22 (NIV)
This month’s Oikeo Prayer Call (#20) focused on the challenging question, “What do you do when God disappoints you?” It was a powerful session aimed at understanding how to navigate feelings of disappointment when God’s plan doesn’t align with our own expectations.
The Lord wants each of us to know that He doesn’t desire a dysfunctional relationship. He loves us with an unmatched love, as seen in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” Even when we feel disappointed or confused by His actions, God’s love for us never wavers.
Participants were reminded that God is big enough to carry all our burdens. Psalm 55:22 speaks to this: “Cast your burden on the Lord, and He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” We are encouraged to pour out our hearts to Him, because He is the only One who can truly comfort us in our pain.
The story of Job was also a focus during the call. Like Job, who demanded an audience with God because he couldn’t understand why so much suffering was allowed, we too can feel perplexed and burdened by life’s trials. Yet, despite Job’s deep pain and demands for answers, God never gave him a direct response. Instead, God reminded Job of His sovereignty and unmatched wisdom, inviting him to trust in the One who sees the bigger picture.
Similarly, in Luke 8:22-25, the disciples experienced a terrifying storm while Jesus slept. When they woke Him in panic, asking if He cared that they were perishing, Jesus calmed the storm and asked, “Where is your faith?” Even when we feel abandoned or overlooked, God is with us in the storm, working in His own timing.
The Takeaway
God’s timing is not our timing. When disappointment strikes, we are encouraged to have an honest conversation with Him, to pour out our hearts, and trust that He is carrying us through our pain. It’s okay to wrestle with our feelings and ask tough questions—God is big enough to handle it. But even when we don’t understand, we can rest in the truth that He loves us, and He is working all things together for our good.
