“Overcoming Fear” by Joseph Prince
“Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the Lord, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the Lord; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.“
2 Chronicles 20:3-4 (NIV)
Fear is a universal emotion, one that can strike even the bravest of hearts. It’s a feeling we all encounter at some point in our lives when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges. But what do you do when fear grips you, and your circumstances appear utterly hopeless?
In Jospeph Prince’s February Devotional, he delves into the story of King Jehoshaphat’s (2 Chronicles 20). His devotional provides profound insights into overcoming fear and finding hope in desperate times and I pray that many of you have decided to subscribe to Jospeh Prince’s readings. For now, here is a summary of some of the main points of the story.
A Glimpse into Jehoshaphat’s Fear (2 Chronicles 20:3-4): King Jehoshaphat, like many of us, wasn’t a fearless superhero. He was an ordinary person who felt fear when confronted with a terrifying situation. In fact, when he learned that three formidable armies were closing in on Jerusalem, his immediate reaction was fear. But here lies the hope for us all—Jehoshaphat’s initial fear didn’t define his destiny.
The Turning Point (2 Chronicles 20:3): What set Jehoshaphat apart was his response to fear. Instead of surrendering to it or becoming bitter and angry at God, he did something remarkable. He “set himself to seek the LORD.” This was his turning point, and it’s a lesson for us all. When we’re overwhelmed by circumstances, it’s precisely the moment to draw near to God, not drift away from Him.
God Is Not the Author of Your Troubles: An essential lesson from this narrative is that God is not the author of our troubles. He is the author and finisher of our faith, victory, and success. Blaming God for our problems is misplaced; instead, we should lean on Him as our solution.
Perfect Love Casts Out Fear (1 John 4:18): Perhaps the most beautiful revelation here is that Jesus is our answer in times of fear. His perfect love has the power to cast out all fear. When you receive distressing news, face health issues, or grapple with personal challenges, turn to Jesus. His love can quell the most profound fears and provide the hope you desperately need.
Conclusion: Fear is a natural human response, and we are not exempt from its grip. However, as we learn from Jehoshaphat’s experience, it’s not about the fear itself but how we respond to it that truly matters. Seeking the Lord when fear strikes can lead to a profound transformation. Remember, God is not the author of your troubles; He is your path to victory. In your most fearful moments, find solace in Jesus, whose perfect love can cast out fear and bring hope even in the direst of circumstances.
